Gollum, from The Hobbit, is a lonely, but dangerous and untrustworthy creature, who hides at the roots of a mountain with only his ring to please him. Gollum reveals his loneliness when he decides to play a game with Bilbo before eating him, when he says, “ ‘Praps we sits here and chats with it a bitsy, my preciousss. It likes riddles, praps it does, does it?’ ” (pg. 73). Gollum is also very untrustworthy, which is shown when Bilbo wins the riddle game, “’But you never guessed my last question, and you promised,’ said Bilbo… but he saw that all was up and that Gollum meant to murder him at any rate.” (82-83). Gollum shows his cleverness when he figures out that the thing that Bilbo is hiding in his “pocketses” was Gollum’s precious ring, so Gollum goes after Bilbo to retrieve it. Gollum might be lonely, but he is dangerous, and impossible to trust.
